"The Rotary Foundation has established the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund for U.S. Rotarians who want to donate toward recovery efforts after a powerful earthquake rocked Haiti on 12 January.
The Haitian Red Cross is estimating that more than 50,000 people are dead and millions more injured after the quake, the impoverished nation’s strongest in 200 years, crumbled government buildings, hospitals, schools, and shantytowns. Most of the capital, Port-au-Prince, is in ruins.
A ShelterBox response team of two U.S. Rotarians and one from the United Kingdom has already mobilized to deliver 500 containers of supplies to the affected areas. Also, more than 100 Aquaboxes are being delivered to Haiti to provide safe water."
Rotary Club of Temecula is a sponsor for a Shelter Box for Haiti relief effort.
Since its inception in 2000, ShelterBox has provided shelter and dignity following over 100 disasters in more than 60 countries, bringing the organization to the forefront of international disaster relief. ShelterBox instantly responds to earthquake, volcano, flood, hurricane, cyclone, tsunami or conflict by delivering boxes of aid. In many cases “ShelterBoxes” have made the difference between life and death.
Each “ShelterBox” supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless. The contents are tailored depending on the nature and location of the disaster, with great care taken sourcing every item to ensure it is robust enough to be of lasting value. Highly trained ShelterBox Response Teams distribute boxes on the ground, working closely with local organizations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs worldwide. More about Shelter Box.

First work trip to orphanage for new year was Friday, January 8th. Joining on this trip were Greg Bowers(Lake Elsinore), Don Phinney(Murrieta), Tom Thomas(Lake Elsinore), Dee Thomas(Lake Elsinore), Sue Dell'Acqua(Hemet Sunrise and wife of 5330 DG) and Kent Demuth (Temecula and taking picture).
The project is in the final stages of cleanup: outside trim, more dry wall (will it ever end), bathrooms, new counter work area in kitchen. Other items remaining include: final paint inside and outside, gutters, more blocking and caulking outside, and carpet for the upstairs area.
With over 50 volunteers all together from area clubs and our Tijuana Rotary partners, work has continued through out the summer, fall and now winter. With only one true professional in the bunch, the team is finally seeing the finish line and "we are all proud to be part of the team".
Funding is an ongoing issue for the project.
Next trip planned, January 15th. Contact Kent Demuth at

On the other side of the world - Help for Hopeless in Bangladesh
Bangladesh is a country about the size of Iowa with a population equal to half the population of the United States. It has more that its share of slums and street people whose only source of food is begging and going through garbage in the cities. In the capital city of Dhaka alone, there are over 3.4 million people living in more than 5,000 slums. Bangladesh and many other smaller countries, often generally unknown, are off the radar screen when it comes to humanitarian aid. But they have just as great a need as third world countries that are better known. Rotarian Kent Demuth visited Bangladesh December 2007 while participating in a national polio immunization effort and saw first hand miles of slums and an endless parade of street people. This year the Rotary Club of Temecula identified Bangladesh as a country to provide with humanitarian aid. Working with the 20-member Rotary Club of North Khulna, which is overwhelmed with the need, our club provides assistance through funding for mosquito netting, blankets and other humanitarian items. Mosquitoes are present year round in Bangladesh, and malaria is an ongoing scourge.
Blankets and mosquito netting were distributed at clinic sites and slums through the month of December. Medical aid was provided to a sixth grade student with eye problems. Blankets and mosquito netting were distributed to families in the village of Deana and Khadimul Islam Orphanage. And a gift that will keep on giving, a “Rickshaw van," was handed over to a destitute woman on Dec. 11 that will generate income for her family. Hasina Begum is a vegetables sales woman, and was passing human-dweller life with her 3 children. Now she will be able to collect vegetables from growers outside the city and will sale/distribute those door-to-door in the residential areas with the assistance of her eldest son.
Khulna Rotarian Hadi wrote to our club: "We raised a toast at our regular weekly meeting on 4 December at 6:30 pm to your club members and pray to the almighty for all of your health, courage to work for humanity and joy. We haven't had any assistance from outside of the club for a long time before this. After getting your fund, our members started participating in projects with great enthusiasm; seems like they just awake up from deep languor!"
