Speakers will be Alyson Drago with an overview on the International Committee and Rachel Mason will discuss the Foundation. The meeting is held upstairs from our regular meeting room at 11am and is open to all members interested in attending.

Chris also asked all of us to plan on helping out with the Race for the Cure in October. They are in need of box trucks, trailers or stake bed trucks to help with this event. Derek Thomas announced the date of February 26th has been set for our new fundraiser called Rotary Taste of the World which will feature food from all over the world as well as beer and wine. The location has not been confirmed, but more information will follow. One of the main ways this event will raise money for international projects is to great some great baskets and sell raffle tickets, they are asking for donated items to go in the baskets.

The Polio Pigs are back and Rachel Mason is urging everyone to put your loose change – or $100 bills into the pigs each week. The goal is to be able to present a check for a large amount to 2010-11 RI President Ray Klinginsmith in January when he visits our District.

The Foundation Gala is November 13th and we are collecting items for both the live and silent auctions. Contact Rachel if you can donate any items including gift certificates from your business, time share, or sports tickets. 909.838.8071, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. David Neault introduced Tom Pinch who is also known as “The Time-Lapse Painter”. Tom shared a video of his time lapse work on an oil painting of George Lopez and displayed the finished work.  To help us raise funds the evening of the Berlin concert Tom will be creating an original painting of Terri Nunn and donating his artwork. You can check out Tom’s work including some of his time lapse videos at www.tompinch.com

There were no recognitions and no drawing to allow extra time for a great speaker James Biesterfeld, Special Agent (Ret), US Army Intelligence. James has spoken to us before and because of the great interest in his information the meeting ran long again this time as before. For more information; there is a great article on our website about his work and background.

Alyson Drago announced the first in what we hope will be a series of Family dinners with kids. Carl Pinkard is hosting at his home on Saturday October 2nd, so save the date. Since this social is focused around children, the plan is to begin early; around 4pm. More information and a signup sheet will come soon.

The International Committee is meeting this Friday at TGI Fridays in Temecula – 11:30am. Anyone who is interested in joining the committee is welcomed, or if you just want to hear what they are doing, please come.

The Rotary “Taste of the World” Committee will meet on Monday August 30th 4:30pm at the Temecula Wine Company 29073 Overland Drive (near Margarita). Come hear about the fundraiser or just enjoy the wine.

Raj Narayanan congratulated the New Generations Rotary club on their first successful fundraiser. The Beer Pong and bowling event was well attended, got lots of great media attention and according to Raj - a lot of fun. The event brought in money to help support Jon Boy’s Inc and the Rotary Foundation.

It was a great day for recognizing wedding anniversaries; Chris Binkley celebrated 42 years and Sandy Villella 10 years. Gerry Wilson was recognized for his 2 year anniversary in our club. Though the four tenors could not be convinced to sing, the club honored Leif Jacobson’s birthday with an unrecognizable rendition of Happy Birthday. Jon Lieberg confessed to having spent two weeks touring Australia with his wife Jill.

Tina Gottlieb has agreed to help with arranging programs again this year and introduced two of our members who gave “Craft” talks to tell us about their lives. First was Tammy Wilson who began by showing us her wedding photo taken 31 years ago, and paid special attention to her husband Will’s “Elvis” hair. Another photo of Will and one of their two daughters as she arrived at college in San Diego a few weeks ago; special notice was taken of the lack of “Elvis” hair in that photo. Tammy talked about her two passions, her family and Oak Grove and made another shameless plea for everyone to “Please vote on Kohl's Cares for our gym project!” Here’s the link http://apps.facebook.com/KohlsCares/school/1071771/oak-grove-institute?src=IdeaShare&ref=mf

Jon Lieberg gave the second talk talking about his life growing up in Pasadena and going to school in Alhambra. In spite of the computer showing his photo presentation out of order, he shared great photos of his family’s department store from 1910 and his parents at Huntington Harbor. There were photos of Machu Picchu and Australia, as well as the Rosarito Ensenada Bike ride. He told us how he met his wife Jill, hitch-hiked across North America and came to be an attorney in Temecula.  An avid football fan he’s attended more than 40 Rose Bowl games and hundreds of College Football games. Jon joined Rotary in 1979; has belonged to our club for 20 years and is a past president.

Gary Thornhill held the winning ticket for the drawing pulling the 10 of clubs for a $25 prize. Thanks to John Panique for selling tickets!

The second part of the program was delivered by International Chair Alyson Drago speaking about two projects that need our help. The first is called Joni and Friends and if focused on gathering donated wheel chairs and other walking aids for people who otherwise have no way of moving around. She is currently looking for a project coordinator from our club to work with this organization.

The other project is Thousand Smiles which is a non-Rotary project run by Rotarians in Ensenada. Cyndi Light is the project coordinator from our club. There are lots of volunteer opportunities for Doctors, Dentists and Surgeons as well as non professionals. Speaking Spanish is not necessary to help, please see Cyndi or Alyson if you have question. The website is www.thousandsmiles.org
The drawing was won by Allyson Trantum and once again the illusive Joker remained in the deck but she still got $25 cash! Every week there are fewer cards; your odds of winning improve so be sure to buy your tickets next week! Thanks Raj for stepping up to the plate to sell tickets! It is a requirement for all Red Badgers so see Chris Binkley to take your turn selling tickets!

Their unlikely entry into the wine making business has turned out to be a success, just as everything he has undertaken. Gerry’s wife Rosie shared some other stories as well, giving us great insights into their family.
The “wheel” was officially retired and a brand new deck of cards came out for our drawing. It was won by none other than legendary Rotarian Leif Houkom – he didn’t pull the joker however but won $25.

Rotary Avenues of Service

Rotary’s commitment to Service Above Self is channeled through four Avenues of Service, which form the foundation of Rotary.

Club Service

Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the smooth functioning of Rotary clubs.

Vocational Service

Vocational Service involves club members serving others through their professions and aspiring to high ethical standards. Rotarians, as business leaders, share skills and expertise through their vocations, and they inspire others in the process.

Community Service

Community Service is the opportunity Rotary clubs have to implement club projects and activities that improve life in the local community.

International Service

International Service encompasses efforts to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the world and to promote world understanding and peace. It includes everything from contributing to PolioPlus to helping Rotary Youth Exchange students adjust to their host countries.
