ROTARY CARES ABOUT TEMECULA CHILDREN
Let’s do what’s best for our children: teach them to read.

35% of children arrive at kindergarten not prepared to learn

Evidence suggests that children who are not fluent readers and writers by the end of third grade are less likely to catch up with their peers

Academic failure in late elementary school results in increased risk for substance abuse, delinquency, teen pregnancy, school dropout and violence.

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library Benefit Concert

Please join us on September 18, 2010 for a benefit concert celebrating the local Imagination Library program benefiting the children of Temecula. The benefit concert will be held at Weins Family Cellars with headliner Berlin taking the stage.
Berlin was formed in Orange County, California in the late 1970s. They are best known for their international hit "Take My Breath Away" (from the movie Top Gun) in 1986.
The Imagination Library is a book distribution program targeted at providing books monthly to children age 0-5. The program was started by entertainer Dolly Parton in her home State of Tennessee and has now been replicated in over 48 states, Canada and Great Britain. The Rotary Club of Temecula is the sponsor for the Imagination Library in Temecula.

Since March of 2009 more than 500 children receive books each month, delivered to their home at no cost to the family. Our goal is to register each and every child from birth to five years of age in Temecula. Each child receives a pre-selected, age-appropriate, book each month free of charge. Registered children have the potential of completing the program with their own library of up to 60 books. Children are registered in the program without regard to family income. The Imagination Library seeks to give every child the best prospects for academic and lifelong learning.

The price for one book a month for each child is $2.34, or $28.00 per year, which includes price of postage.   There are many more eligible children in Temecula and the Rotary Club of Temecula wants to make sure that all children are allowed to receive this gift. We need your support to keep this program alive and on-going; we hope you will choice to participate in our upcoming benefit concert on September 18th. Your tax-deductible donation to the Rotary Club Foundation-Imagination Library would secure the continuation of this program.

Your support will allow thousands of books to be delivered right to children’s doorsteps and help prepare them for the next step in their lives –school. Quality education is the key to all success and improvement in any field of endeavor, and reading is the key to successful learning.

It is with great pleasure the Rotary Club of Temecula continues its partnership with the Imagination Library. We are delighted to participate in this wonderful early childhood reading program that assists in preparing children for the years ahead. We hope you will be able to join us at our benefit concert.

Temecula Rotary Literacy Update Print E-mail
Saturday, 19 September 2009 19:25

Rotarian, Bernie Bramante, has worked tirelessly for the cause of children’s literacy since joining the Noon Club. His current project, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, has turned out to be a resounding success. He and his team, composed of David Neault, Karie Reuther, Bruce Cripe, and Tina Roy, mailed out a total of three thousand books since the beginning of the Temecula Rotary’s Imagination Library Program.

This Rotary sponsored program is limited to five hundred kids. There is currently a waiting list of six. These most likely will be added to the roster during September, when several of the kids currently in the program will turn five years old and be ready to head off to kindergarten.

In addition to the kids enrolled directly in the Club sponsored group, Bernie has recruited several other organizations to participate under the Rotary umbrella. He expects an additional thirty children to be enrolled through the Headstart and First Five programs. He has also been working with the Temecula Boys and Girls club,   PECHANGA Indian Elementary School, MILGARD CORP, and WAL-MART. Bernie says the PECHANGA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL will enroll approximately 256 students and will pay the full cost of annual registration. MILGARD CORP, Murrieta, and WALMART, Temecula, will offset the cost of the program for their employees’ kids, as well. Bernie is scheduled to speak at MILGARD’s annual HR meeting in October.

More Reading to the Children
Bernie attended the Temecula WAL-MART grand opening on September 16. He will be working with management to create a reading program similar to the one he created for the Club. The employees will be encouraged to read at local elementary school, most likely Vail Elementary.

Bernie will also be meeting with TVUSD staff to coordinate readings in November as part of National Literacy month. Invitations to read will be extended to Jeanne McClellan, for Rotary, Maryann Edwards, for the City of Temecula, and Carol Leighty, for the District. He is looking for suggestions and volunteers.

Readings are already scheduled on September 21 with three HEADSTART and FIRSTFIVEclasses. Readers are David Neault and Bernie Bramante.

On The Horizon
Bernie continues to reach into the community and promote Rotary and the DPFIL. He plans to implement local reading programs with PTA, Great Harvest Bread, and others. The Committee is exploring various fundraising projects to help maintain the Library’s reading programs and fund low income families who otherwise might not be able to participate.

Imagination Library Reaches Goal of 500 Print E-mail
Tuesday, 05 May 2009 10:20

As of March 19, 2009, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library has reached its goal of enrolling 500 Temecula children in the program.   We have exceeded our wildest expectations, and are extremely pleased with how the program has been embraced.

Our next step is to seek community support that will enable us to expand the Imagination Library program.  Members who would like to participate in a brainstorming session to develop more creative ways to reach community leaders and businesses are welcome to call Bernie Bramante at 951.795.0087.

All members of the Club should take special pride in having successfully given children the gift of literacy, an important tool for greater academic success.
